Trigger points are knots that form in muscles when they cannot relax. They can usually be felt under the skin and may irritate the nerves around them causing pain in other parts of the body. Common areas that develop trigger points are the arms, legs, lower back, and neck. Trigger point injections can be used to soothe muscle pain and treat fibromyalgia and unresponsive myofascial pain syndrome. Treatment consists of injection of a local anesthetic, saline, and/or corticosteroid into the trigger point. Treatment is quick and there is no downtime.
